Lake Muskoka has Great Water
The factors that make the waters of a lake strong and healthy are the amount of plants and soil around the water’s edge, to filter water runoff before it enters the lake, and the number of fresh water sources that enter the lake. On both counts, Lake Muskoka is the strongest of the three big lakes. Lake Muskoka is fed by all of the Algonquin and Huntsville lakes which enter through the Muskoka River at Bracebridge, the Hoc Roc which enters at Gravenhurst and Lakes Rosseau and Joseph which feed into Lake Muskoka through the Indian River at Port Carling. That water all exits the Lake Muskoka at the falls in Bala where it goes to Georgian Bay via the Moon River. This constant turnover of water in Lake Muskoka keeps it healthy. Water test results are available for a variety of locations around Lake Muskoka, and cottagers across Muskoka participate in monitoring activities to ensure that the lake is protected, as well as there being a Municipal water testing program. Preserving the fabulous water in our lakes is a huge priority for Muskoka governments and cottagers alike
Every Weekend Becomes a Holiday Adventure with a Cottage on the Big Lakes
One of the beauties of cottage life on Lake Muskoka is the wide diversity the lake offers you. Where else can you do your grocery shopping by boat or stop at the butcher’s dock to purchase steaks and salmon for dinner? Where else can you boat to two fabulous Canada Day fireworks displays or have your choice of 5 restaurants that you can go to by boat? Where else can you, from your dock, watch hundreds of triathlon swimmers dive off the upper decks of our two steam ships, beginning their race? Where else can your children join the crew on Sunday mornings as they fight off cottager pirates from the deck of the Steamship Segwun? Where else can you visit a bird sanctuary in the middle of the lake, or see award winning architecture that spans 100 years? Holidays at your cottage retreat become fantastic adventures for your family and friends, not just a run of the mill weekend. You can go through the locks in Port Carling and venture up to Windermere for lunch, or take your children to Muskoka Woods for elite camping. You can travel down the Joe River and stop for refreshments at the prestigious Lake Joe Club, before wending your way back to Port Carling, and re-entering the locks for your trip home.
Lake Muskoka, the biggest of the three lakes, is an endless source of boating enjoyment with its numerous sailing clubs for novices, and locations to visit, as unique as the wharf at Gravenhurst, the tiny old fashioned Town of Bala, or the fine shopping of Port Carling. It is a long and peaceful putt up the Muskoka River to Bracebridge where shopping on the main street and restaurants awaits you. There is nothing in the world like Muskoka and the number of Muskoka cottagers who come from international locations to enjoy these three unsurpassed lakes is the evidence.
Muskoka Has a Lot to Offer in Every Season
The Municipalities in Muskoka plan events that draw cottagers back to the cottage all year long. When water sports are over, snow sports take their place, like the Gravenhurst Winter Games across the bay at the Wharf. Summer is a wonderful time for a quiet canoe ride or a slow putt in the boat at sunset, but crisp sunny winter days beckon you out onto the lake for long walks, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing. Sitting on the deck with a tall cool drink is replaced in the winter with cuddling up in front of the fire after an outdoor adventure.
Festivals abound in every season making Muskoka a year round retreat from the hectic pace of the city and the work.
Time in Muskoka is a rest and renewal for all your senses. Do not underestimate the benefits that all your family will derive from spending time in this beautiful cottage or home on Lake Muskoka
